Finding a Venue

"Of course, church isn’t just about Sundays. But the factors which apply to the main public worship also apply in general to other meetings in midweek. Antioch churches don’t have a habit of creating small group Bible studies in homes. This isn’t an iron rule, but we’ve tended to prefer middle size midweek meetings or programmes like Alpha or Celebrate Recovery to the classic home group.

Other notes on finding a venue

Identifying a space in which to gather people for worship and other activities is a pretty big deal.

Choice of location and building says a huge amount about what a church values, as well as being influenced by budget, availability and good contacts with people who own buildings.

Traditionally the Anglican church has owned its own buildings, and this brings with it major advantages as well as challenges. In Antioch's case, we tend to rent space in non-traditional buildings if this is possible. This includes:

  • For several months The Upper Room Church met at a Brazilian Restaurant in Cheetham Hill (pictured above)
  • When Lockdown allows, Oldhams Church meets on Sundays at the Barlow Park Youth and Community Centre
  • Gorton Park Community Church meets at a Rectory where the planter and his family live
  • One of our Network Wide Prayer and Worship gatherings was held at the Royal British Legion in Bolton (pictured below)
